Good that you ask this question. The simplest answer is that for plain text (ascii) each character is 8 bits (1 byte). If your text file contains A and nothing else, the file size is 1 byte. For unicode, each character is 16 bits or 2 bytes (this is not exactly true, but take it for now). A file containing ABCDE has a size of 12 bytes (the other 2 bytes are the overhead).
